THE BACKGROUND STORY...
During the first lockdown in March 2020, I was totally occupied with finishing my final year visual report (dissertation). When the second national lockdown was on the horizon in November, I decided that I needed to keep myself creatively occupied. I've always been into arts and crafts and little creative projects, and my aunt bought me a jewellery making kit when I was younger. I used to make earrings and bracelets both for myself and to give to friends as gifts. I had always done it for fun and never really thought about selling them.
Since studying Fashion Communication and Promotion at university and constantly being immersed in the world of fashion and lifestyle, and also being around other fellow student fashionistas, I've really begun to find my own sense of style. And since being a student, I've learned to look for the cheaper ways of being fashionable!! Many trends come full cycle, some quicker than others, and in the last couple of years the 90s and 00s aesthetic has really come back into play.
I was watching an episode of Friends, and I had really started to notice the accessories and jewellery that Rachel, Monica and Phoebe were wearing. In one of the scenes, Rachel was wearing a short beaded choker-style necklace, and I knew that I immediately had to find myself one. After coming across a few Instagram ads for some, it dawned on me. Why don't I just make myself one? It would be way cheaper than buying an overpriced, mass-produced one that I'd probably see 6 other girls wearing on my Instagram home feed. AND I would be able to choose the exact colours I wanted.
So, that's when Georgie Lou Studio was born.
I spent some time making beaded necklaces of all different colour combinations and took squillions of photos of them. I then set up an Instagram account and an online shop on Etsy. It's definitely still a work in progress, but it's a great lockdown hobby and I'm excited to see where it goes.
